Old Forge Lake Cruises Completes Stability Testing
Old Forge Lake Cruises of Old Forge, New York completes stability tests of its passenger vessels, the Clearwater and President Harrison Mailboat.
Stability tests of both vessels were conducted under the direction of Marine Engineer, Ken Johnson. New York State Department of Parks & Recreation, Marine Unit inspectors Larry Migliozzi and Brian Kempf observed the testing.
Utilizing barrels of water to simulate the vessel being filled to capacity, the engineer had the barrels positioned to simulate a worse than worse case scenario of passenger weight sifting to one side of the vessel. Results insure that under no condition could the vessel lean over beyond the point of righting itself.
Using the results of the stability test and the new average passenger weight of 174, the Clearwater is now rated for 115 passengers, down from its previous rating of 125 passengers. The Mailboat maintained its 10 passenger capacity. The results of the Clearwater’s test and its new capacity will be applied to her sister ship, the Uncas, which is of confirmed identical design.
In the aftermath of the tragic Ethan Allen accident on Lake George last fall, and as part of a statewide effort to ensure the continued safety of all passenger vessels on New York state jurisdiction landlocked waterways, all vessels are required to conduct a stability test before the end of June 2006. Normally, stability tests are done only once, when the vessel is new.
While in Old Forge, the state inspectors also completed their annual inspection of the Clearwater and Uncas (both 65’, diesel-powered, double-deck tour boats) and the President Harrison Mailboat (a 35’, diesel-powered, single-deck boat). All vessels passed inspection.

PRESS RELEASE
Old Forge Lake Cruises Conducts Stability Tests
On Wednesday, May 17th at 8:30 a.m. Old Forge Lake Cruises of Old Forge, New York will conduct stability tests of its passenger vessels, the Clearwater and President Harrison Mailboat. Each spring all three of Old Forge Lake Cruises’ passenger vessels, the Clearwater and Uncas (both 65’, diesel-powered, double-deck tour boats) and the President Harrison Mailboat (a 35’, diesel-powered, single-deck boat), undergo annual safety inspections by the New York State Department of Parks & Recreation. This spring, in the aftermath of the tragic Ethan Allen accident on Lake George last fall, and as part of a statewide effort to ensure the continued safety of all passenger vessels on New York state jurisdiction waterways, all vessels will be required to conduct a stability test before commencing their 2006 cruising season. Normally, stability tests are done only once, when the vessel is new. New state regulations will also increase the average passenger weight allowance from the previous 140 pounds to the new 174 pounds. New vessels capacities will be calculated utilizing the new weight standard and stability test results. Old Forge Lake Cruises, which has operated tour boats on the Fulton Chain of Lakes since 1976, will conduct stability tests on the Clearwater and President Harrison Mailboat, on Wednesday morning, under the supervision of a state authorized marine engineer, as well as officials from the New York State Department of Parks & Recreation, which governs all landlocked bodies of water in New York state. The results of the Clearwater’s test will be applied to her sister ship, the Uncas, which is of confirmed identical design.
